Fabric Stamping with Zim

Masking

Masking is a stamping technique that makes it appear as though one stamped image is behind another. Art stampers use this method on paper, but the technique for fabric stamping is a little different!

Here's how we made the images of the reindeer, shown in our Chrismas images section.

Stamp an image - the one that you want to appear as though it is in front - on fabric.

Stamp the image you want to appear in front.

Stamp the same image again on a thick piece of paper, like an index card. Let both images dry. Then cut out the paper mask a little larger than it really is - leaving about 1/16 - 1/8 inch margin around the stamped image. We're showing the paper mask stamped in light grey, because we can show you what happens beneath it on the fabric - we know you'll use some other color.

Stamp and cut out the paper mask.

Carefully place the paper image exactly on the fabric stamped image.

Cover the image carefully. Image covered with mask.

Apply paint to your next stamp, & stamp it so that part of it is on top of the paper.

Stamp the next image over the mask.

Voila! Your second stamped image will appear to be behind your first, & there will be a thin white line that separates the images. This is the look you want!

All done.

Here's what our four-reindeer project looks like when we're done.
