Supplies

  • ZimPaint (2-4 colors)
  • Squeeze bottles (1 for each paint color)
  • Shaving cream (the less scented, the better)
  • Very large mixing bowl
  • Large metal or plastic pan or tray (large enough to accommodate your fabric, preferably with an edge or lip around all sides)
  • Variety of spoons, chopsticks, skewers, spatulas, funnel, & measuring cups
  • All natural fiber fabric or garment (it needs to lie flat in your pan or tray), pre-washed

Make the Shaving Cream Mixture
In the large bowl, mix about half a can of shaving cream with about a cup of warm water.  Whisk the mixture until it's blended & soupy in consistency.  Poor into the pan or tray; it should be about an inch deep.  Make more of this mixture, if you need to.

Mix the Marbling Paint
For each color of marbling paint, squirt about half a cup of shaving cream into a measuring cup, or similar container.  Add 3-4 heaping tablespoons of ZimPaint & stir well.  It should be the consistency of thick tomato soup.  You can add a few drops of warm water to the solution, if you think it's too thick. Pour the paint solution into a squeeze bottle, using a funnel.  This makes about 2 oz. of ZimPaint-shaving cream solution.

Marble the Paint
Squeeze 2-4 colors of the marbling paint onto the surface shaving cream mixture.   Begin by making vertical & horizontal stripes.   Marble the paint by dragging a chopstick lightly through the paint.  Experiment by squeezing the paint in different designs & by using any type of utensil, stick, comb, etc. to create a marbled effect.  Use care to only drag through the paint lightly!

Put the fabric on the marbling mixture.

Carefully press out bubbles & wrinkles with a chopstick.  Let the fabric sit on top of the mixture for 5 minutes.

Some notes:
*You can use this mixture again.  If there's enough paint still on the surface, you can marble another piece of fabric immediately.  We've found that usually you'll need to add more ZimPaint &
re-marbleize the surface before trying another piece of fabric.

*If you're marbleizing a garment with 2 sides, the paint mixture will soak through to the other side.  Usually, we were happy this happened & got both sides marbled at one time.  If you don't want this to happen, &/or you want to marbleize each side separately for consistency, you will have to place a plastic wrap - covered piece of cardboard inside the garment before you marble either side.

Carefully left your fabric out of the tray.  Your marbled fabric will look like this when you remove it from the marbling mixture.
Rush to a surface that's been prepared with several layers of newspaper!
Lay the fabric down, shaving cream side up.
Let your fabric dry for 12-24 hours.  Allow your fabric to become almost dry.
Rinse in cold water to remove the shaving cream & remnants of paint.

*Allow to air dry.
*Heat set the ZimPaint on your fabric by ironing, without steam,  on the hottest setting your fabric will accommodate.  You'll notice the smell of some remaining shaving cream!
*Wash & dry the fabric normally, which will remove all traces of the shaving cream aroma!
*Stamp with full strength ZimPaint!
*Heat set again.
